Alexander County
Alexander County is the southern most county in Illinois and is named for William M. Alexander, an early State of Illinois politician elected as Speaker of the House in 1822.. Its largest city is Cairo which is bordered by the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The Ohio River joins the Mississippi River at this point. Cairo is protected from potential high river waters by levees built in 1843. These levees are some of the highest in the United States. Cairo is noted for being the home of Fort Defiance, commanded by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War.
The public has access to our services including trips to several local medical offices, Shawnee Community College, and Southern Illinois University.
