Johnson County

Johnson County was organized in 1812 out of Randolph County.  It was named for Richard M. Johnson, who was then a U.S. Congressman from Kentucky.  In 1813 Johnson commanded a Kentucky regiment at the Battle of the Thames, after which he claimed to have killed Tecumseh in hand to hand combat.  Johnson went on to become the 9th Vice President of the United States.

Johnson County is the home of the towns of Belknap, Buncombe, Cypress, Goreville, New Burnside, Simpson, and Vienna.  Vienna is the home of The Powell Museum and Research Center which highlights the life and politcal career of Paul Powell.  It explores the history and geneaology of Johnson County.  The museum houses several large quilts that reveal a wealth of information about past citizens of Johnson County.

In 2009 Shawnee Mass Transit District moved its headquarters to Vienna and will begin building a new facility in Industrial Park sometime in 2011.
